Teikyo University Recurrent College held a seminar titled "Escalating US-China Trade Friction and Conflict and its Impact on the Japanese and Global Economies" atKasumigaseki Campus

On Thursday, September 4, 2025, Teikyo University Recurrent College "Escalating U.S.-China Trade Friction and Conflict and Its Impact on the Japanese and Global Economies" (Supported by Institute for International Trade and Investment) was held at Teikyo University Kasumigaseki Campus. This symposium featured up-to-date reports by leading experts on the current situation of the Trump tariffs that are causing turmoil in the global economy and the escalating exchange war between the U.S. and China, including retaliatory tariffs and countermeasures, which are adversely affecting global economic growth, with Okinaga Research Institute specially appointed Professor Guo Sizhi as coordinator.

Professor Tomoo Marukawa of the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo gave a clear explanation of the current situation and policy outlook for the US and China in competitive areas such as semiconductors, AI, and 5G, based on the theme of "Intensifying US-China High-Tech Friction and Competition," using specific anecdotes from his own experiences on the ground.
Professor Guo Sizhi, with the theme of "US-China friction and conflict from the perspective of the history of US-China relations," examined the nature of US-China economic relations from the period of US-China contact, which began in 1844 when US-China relations were established, to the current era of US-China rivalry, and their impact on both countries and the world.
Professor Yoichi Makaya of Nagoya University of Foreign Studies gave a talk entitled "Changes and Reorganization of Industrial Supply Chains Due to US-China Trade Friction," in which he presented detailed survey data and discussed a reexamination of the economic relationship between Japan and the US and China, Japanese companies' awareness of and efforts to address China risks, trends in business in China by Western companies, and the current state and future direction of business in China by Japanese companies.
Jun Takeda, Chief Economist and President of Itochu Research Institute, gave a presentation titled "US-China Friction and Conflict and its Impact on the Japanese and Global Economies." He explained the history of the US-China friction and conflict, pointing out that the growth forecast for the Chinese economy has declined significantly, and further presented various charts to forecast the economic situations in the US, China, and Japan.
In addition to researchers, experts, business people, and media representatives, the symposium was attended by many members of the public, who participated in a lively exchange of opinions on a timely topic of great social interest.
